Until when will the red and white flag be hoisted?

As you know, the Indonesian government has appealed to the public and departments to raise the Red and White Flag. This was done in order to commemorate the 78th anniversary of Indonesia’s independence, which will take place on Thursday, August 17, 2023.

The call for the installation of the Red and White Flag is contained in the Circular (MO) of the Minister of the State Secretariat (Mensesneg) No. B-523/M/S/TU.00.04/06.2023. All Indonesians are invited to raise the red and white flag in their neighborhoods from August 1 to 31, 2023 to welcome the Republic of Indonesia anniversary peak on August 17, 2023.

The red and white flag can be hung not only around the house, but also in several places, for example, in buildings, schools or along roads. There is also another call for the public to display various types of decorations at the same time, such as banners, banners, posters, billboards, etc., and may start from June 20, 2023.

Rules for setting the red and white flag

The government has set several rules for the installation of the Red and White Flag. Meanwhile, the rules for flying the Red and White Flag are contained in Law (UU) No. 24 of 2009, which regulates flags, languages, and the National Symbol and the National Anthem.

• Hoisting and/or planting of the National Flag may take place between sunrise and sunset.

• In certain cases, the hoisting and/or planting of the National Flag may take place at night.

• The national flag must be flown at every celebration of Indonesian National Independence Day on 17 August by all citizens entitled to use homes, buildings or offices, educational institutions, public and personal transportation throughout the territory of the Unitary State. Republic of Indonesia and in the representations of the Republic of Indonesia is abroad.

• In order to raise the national flag at home, the regional government must provide the national flag to Indonesian citizens who cannot afford it.

• In addition to being raised on August 17, the National Flag is also raised to commemorate national holidays or other events.

Installation of the Red and White Flag to commemorate the anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia is carried out and / or at:

• Citizens with the right to control the use of the home

• Building or office

• Education departments

• Public transport

• Personal transport

• Representations of the Republic of Indonesia abroad.

Prohibition on the installation of a red and white flag

The red and white flag is the national symbol and should therefore be honored. However, there are a number of restrictions that need to be understood by the community when it raises or displays the Red and White Flag. This is regulated by Article 24 of Law No. 24 of 2009.

The following are some of the prohibitions against using or flying the Red and White Flag:

• Damage, tearing, trampling, burning or other actions aimed at tarnishing, insulting or humiliating the honor of the State Flag.

• Use of the national flag for billboards or commercial advertising.

• Flying a damaged, torn, faded, crumpled or tarnished national flag.

• Printing, embroidery, as well as writing letters, numbers, images or other signs and installing badges or any other things on the National Flag.

• The use of the National Flag as a ceiling, roofing, wrapping of goods and coverings that may diminish the honor of the National Flag.
