Jakarta, Klinik Farma – Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Menko Marwes) Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan expressed his views on the exclusion of Indonesian nickel in the United States (US) due to the Inflation Reduction Act or IRA rules.
This regulation itself will contain incentives and subsidies related to green energy. However, nickel raw materials for electric battery production from Indonesia are not included in the IRA.
Coordinating Minister Luhut also stated that the US does need nickel from Indonesia to meet its supply needs.
“America is now negotiating with us about the IRA because there is a shortage of them and I told them that you cannot take us lightly if you don’t want everything to be okay,” Luhut said at the IKAXA 2023 National Seminar year, quoted on Friday (15). /9/2023).
Luhut also emphasized that no country in the world has the right to dictate and regulate other countries. Including countries such as the USA.
According to Luhut, the US need for nickel as a raw material for the production of batteries for electric vehicles is quite large. Thus, Indonesia plays an important role in the global nickel supply chain.
“They need a lot of nickel, and they don’t have enough nickel to increase their electric vehicle production by 11 times. That’s why they need us. We also said that we do not have a free trade agreement with them. We are looking for other forms of cooperation for this,” he said.
