Jakarta, Klinik Farma – Rumor has it that President Joko Widodo is on a working visit to South Africa to attend the Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa (BRICS) Summit. Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi confirmed the plan, although he could not say exactly when.

“This is the plan, wait until everything is ready, because we will first prepare for the visit,” Retno Marsudi said at the Presidential Palace on Monday (July 8, 2023).

Regarding the planned working visit, Retno has yet to confirm whether Indonesia will join the Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa (BRICS) trade alliance as it is currently still in the negotiation stage.

“I can’t say yet, because there is still a coordination connection,” he said briefly.

News of Indonesia’s accession to the BRICS trade alliance was also published by the Spectator Index on Thursday (03/08/2023). According to the report, Indonesia joined the alliance, which was joined by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (South Africa) along with 12 other countries. These countries include Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Iran, Mexico and Argentina.

The BRICS observer, who is also a professor at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation in São Paulo, Olivier Stuenkel, said that Indonesia is by far the strongest candidate to join the alliance compared to other countries.

“Indonesia is a strong candidate to join the BRICS, given its regional strength, growing role in the global economy and the absence of global divisions,” Stuenkel said.

“On the contrary, the inclusion of Iran, Venezuela or Saudi Arabia will change the dynamics of the group and make it difficult to maintain the influence of countries like Brazil,” he added.

The BRICS group accounts for more than 40% of the world’s population and about 26% of the economy. The group is often seen as an alternative forum for countries outside of Western-dominated diplomatic channels.

BRICS itself still has a large program to counter Western influence. The alliance is said to be creating a new currency to counter the US dollar that dominates world trade.

This offer of resistance was initiated by Russia. This was due to the political maneuvering of the US and its allies to impose economic and financial sanctions on Moscow as a result of the war in Ukraine, in order to hinder the access of the Land of the Polar Bear to dollar-based trade.
