Jokowi comments on the promoted discourse on the registration of presidential and vice-presidential candidates

The schedule for announcing the registration of candidates for president and vice president will be from October 7 to October 9, 2023. At the same time, the registration period is planned to be accelerated from October 10 to October 16, 2023.

It was previously known that the candidate registration period begins from October 19 to November 25, 2023. The schedule is based on PKPU 3/2022 on the schedule and stages of the 2024 elections.

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud, MD, assessed that if the registration of presidential and vice-presidential candidates is not postponed to October 11-16, it will lead to disruption of electoral activities.

“If it is not moved forward, it will actually affect the stages of the elections. The elections could be disrupted if they do not move forward,” Mahfud said at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Monday (9Nov2023).

Mahfud explained that the election process had a campaign period that ended three days before the vote. Then there’s voting, logistics and ballot printing.

“If you use the old schedule based on Article 26, you will not be able to catch up. If you use the old schedule, we will have to postpone it instead,” Mahfud said.

In addition, according to the former President of the Constitutional Court, the new schedule is sufficient for the registration of presidential and vice-presidential candidates, holding examinations and identifying candidates.
